Identity and chronology
The organization’s published history states that Tim Petro founded Black Gold as a drum and bugle corps in Tulsa in 1985. It first competed in 1987 and fielded corps through 1993. A 1992 Oklahoma City newspaper photograph documents a Kerr Park performance and names trumpeter Cory Sharp of Edmond.

Sponsorship and participation
Black Gold operated as a competitive youth drum-and-bugle corps and later developed winter-percussion activity. The name subsequently continued in a separate winter-guard organization in Dallas.

Activity
The corps competed from 1987 through 1993, placed as high as twenty-third overall, and presented documented themed programs including Oklahoma! in 1989 and Rodeo in 1990.
