Identity and chronology

OSU’s Chilocco collection documents school band, band-and-orchestra, boys’ band, cadet drum corps, marching band, and stadium-band activity. Precisely dated photographs show the Chilocco Band in Newkirk parades in 1910 and September 1912; later records include a football-game band in 1966 and a named twenty-one-member group in 1973.

Leadership

Several photographs show an unidentified faculty director, but no director chronology has been recovered from the catalog metadata.

The ensembles operated within the federal Chilocco Indian Agricultural School, which served Native students near Newkirk from 1884 until 1980.

What the wording does—and does not—claim

The images do not prove an uninterrupted single band from 1910 to 1973. Interpretation must place the music program within the coercive federal boarding-school and assimilation system while also recognizing students’ musical labor and agency.

What remains unknown

Director names, institutional policy, student perspectives, and year-by-year continuity require yearbooks, federal records, and alumni evidence. Individual names from the 1973 caption should be used only when relevant and sensitively.
