History

Identity and chronology

The documented organization began at Ripley on May 7, 1925, when old-time fiddlers and cowboy performer Billy McGinty broadcast from KFRU in Bristow. It was subsequently styled Billy McGinty’s Cowboy Band, and management passed to Otto Gray, whose Oklahoma Cowboys traveled from 1926 through 1936.

Leadership

Billy McGinty was the early namesake; Otto Gray became the manager and defining leader of the nationally touring organization. “Mommie” Gray also had a central organizational role.

Sponsorship and participation

The ensemble was a professional, commercially sponsored radio and touring act, including an early hosiery-company radio advertising arrangement in February 1926.

Activity

The group broadcast on NBC and CBS, appeared in films, made more than a dozen records, recorded an early version of “Midnight Special,” and became the first country-and-western group featured on Billboard’s cover. Gray retired the act in 1936.
