This collection is still growing. It presents documented Oklahoma evidence now available in the archive and identifies important gaps without filling them by assumption.
About this history
This collection covers country, western, western swing, cowboy, bluegrass, string-band, honky-tonk, and related commercial/community traditions where supported by evidence.
Documented evidence already in the archive
- Big Chief Henry's Indian String Band: a Choctaw Hall-family commercial recording ensemble documented in 1929.
- Choctaw-associated later country/bluegrass material including the Bonham Brothers and City Moon in archive research.
- Guymon Cowboy Band: historical town/parade “cowboy band” record, with exact dates/roster requiring local verification.
- Tulsa County research explicitly identifies Bob Wills / Cain's Ballroom / western swing as a major missing extraction target rather than a completed narrative.
- Federal Music Archive research documents popular/dance activity and broader Oklahoma interest in regional music, but this is not a substitute for a country/western history.

The current evidence does not yet support a comprehensive statewide country, western, and bluegrass history. Verified records are presented without filling gaps by assumption.

- Native/Indigenous country and bluegrass intersections.
- Recording studios, labels, promoters, and touring circuits.
How records are distinguished
- “Cowboy band” can describe costume, repertoire, civic branding, or instrumentation; do not infer genre from name alone.
- A venue appearance does not make an artist Oklahoma-based.
- Family/string-band records should remain distinct from western-swing orchestras and modern bluegrass organizations.
