OHS describes the orchestra’s near dissolution after loss of public funding in 1945 and Guy Fraser Harrison succeeding as conductor in 1951, continuing broadcasts and expanding educational concerts.
Limits and open questions
Updates the existing federal-symphony history. No new 1943 founding inferred. The source dates full-time professional status to 1968; avoid applying that status without qualification to the entire 1941–1960 period.
